I recently added my thesis website to the OS Development ring, which concerns our microkernel being built for AMD64 machines.  mr. xsism recently posted a question about testing as he said that as a hobby writing 64-bit OS's is expensive.  This is quite true.

When the site advertising a Test Machines database came out, I added my Opteron system to the list, hoping that other projects would start picking up 64-bit support.

The partial purpose of my website is to assist other programmers in the 64-bit transition, however we are early along as well.  By next spring, much more viable information should be posted as that is the tentative date for the completion of our thesis.

The reason for my post here, however, was merely to ask if anyone had considered 64-bit os's, and if so, are you being held back by not having a machine?  I was thinking that I could run tests for someone, it might help generate more interest in the development for the architecture.  Should you have an interest, feel free to reply here, or at my website:

yeah, looked at the site. Nice design. How do you have a gradient in the bgnd? Also i posted in your forum asking how you tested. I won't be getting a 64bit PC for a few years due to cost and a lack of need for it. What is your demogrpahic target? servers?

ok, just actually read ALL of your post. So you have an opteron, kool. BTW, what is this site for testing stuff now? www.osdever.net is coming up with a Beta Center that will be just for that(testing Oses on PCs of members of the list. It'll be out Jan 1 2004 as we are moving our server and coding the beta center.


I haven't read your thesis, what is it's goal?

Actually an interesting question.  Our site has a thesis proposal (via the About Link) that outlines what we hope to measure with our microkernel.  In a nutshell, we hope to investigate orthogonal persistence, which is kind of complicated to explain, and that is better discussed by our proposal.

  This is Josh, aka eucar.  Nick and I are doint the fecundity project as a joint thesis for the undergraduate honor's program at Eastern Kentucky University.
  As for testing, we use simics, as well as Nick's machine, which is a dually opteron.  We are undertaking this project largely, at this point, as an educational excercise, as well as a research project.  Both Nick and I are very interested in O.S. low-level design, so we wanted to see how they worked by actually writing one.
  Our target demographic is not really a solid idea at this point.  We picked AMD64 technologies because they are interesting and do away with some of the legacy nastiness of x86.  In addition, since there are only two of us, continued development on this project will not bring fruition for quite a while, so we wished to use hardware that will be, hopefully , more common by the time our project becomes somewhat useful.
