Backups make things less reliable apparently

Post by chase »

Seems that the nightly database backup (mysqldump) hung and left one of the forum tables locked. Which meant that if you tried to view a topic it just hung for a long time until a timeout occurred. When you combine that with a couple of search engines trying to crawl the forums it meant that all the Apache connections were tied up so even the homepage that doesn't hit the database couldn't be loaded. Restarted mysql and apache and everything seems to be working.

 I'll have to remember that excuse for not taking backups!
