Apparently the Debian project decided it was worth switching to from regular GLIBC. I agree, wholeheartedly. As a hobbyist maintainer for packages in Linux, I've had to deal with so much crap regarding GLIBC that I think this is an extremely smart move. After seeing bug reports from Ulrich Drepper, [1][2][3][4] I understand quite well why GLIBC is such a miserable failure, and I'm glad to see there are intelligent people working on the problem with clearly defined goals for the project.

What are your opinions?

1. http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5531
2. http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4980
3. http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4403
4. http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5070
(Ad infinitum, by theory of extrapolation.)

It seems like a good switch. I've been really disillusioned about GNU in general, their ethical positions (if they deserve to be called that) seem to ignore the quality of the software altogether. And having a maniac running around doesn't even serve a pseudo-ethical purpose.

Hopefully we'll see more forks from GNU software to seperate development communities less prone to the problems that plague GNU.

I read about that fork on some other news page.
And with this examples it really surprises me that this took so long.

The glibc is one of the fundamental system libs and therefor I would expect a bit more professionalism of developers working on it. No support for Arm because its "crap"?? wtf

Well now we know that not only doctors have to struggle with such nasty thinks like God complexes. ;)

Wow... that Ulrich Drepper character sure is a handfull. How do you kick out a person that's clearly hurting the project?

I know, I read some of his work on his Redhat page when looking up stuff about binutils. After I started really analysing Glibc and it's failures, I found his commits. Then I found the bug reports, and those are just samples. GNU could have done so much, but they fail every practicality required to be successful. The gnutards are so busy being evangelistic they forget about truth and reality. FREE SOFTWARE WILL SURPASS JESUS AND THE GLOBAL ESTABLISHMENT AND GIVE WORLD PEACE, ZOMG FOLLOW US CUZ WE ROX KK?

he has been in charge so long and he is very technically skilled as well, I doubt that such a move would happen

Perfect example for how a software engineer, no matter how technically skilled, is nothing but a PITA if he doesn't have soft skills.

People like him should, in the very least, be "wrapped" by someone who does external communication for him and hits him with a mallet whenever he steps out of line...

"Mallet" reminds me of this.
