Zot OS 2.0 i out

Post by jonny5 »

Just thought I would drop by to mention that Zot OS 2.0 is now out. It has a whole GUI now and is almost crash free. It runs as a shell on Moe-DOS or Free-DOS and it is really pretty cool. Check it out at www.zotos.tk/. Please go to the Forum there so that I know that there are people out there who are interested and are willing to give feedback. So far, even though the traffic reports for my site are high, there are close to no messages in the Forum and only a handful of people have even e-mailed me. PLEASE RESPOND!

Thanks, Jonathan Five

According to your website, ZotOS will run on its own (ie, without a version of DOS installed)... how?  It seems to me ZotOS is actually more of a shell then anything, and requires DOS in order to run.  In other words, ZotOS, isn't actually an OS...

That being said, you seem to've done a good job with the GUI, and I'd be interested to hear what you intend to do with the task-management side of things; especially being DOS based.

Cheers,
Jeff

PS: Information only has on I :)  (ie, the link on your site)

Looks like another DOS shell "os wannabe" to me.

Hey, Windows was, and it worked!

Wasn´t it? Remember, it had pmode routines, task scheudeleuer, the code was written in some normal language (C instead of VB), so it was more then just a shell.

Yeah, I know, I know, I know. You all want a bootstrap, want it to be able to run Windows applications, want it to be able to generate green energy, be capable of space flight, double as a washing machine and fit on a floppy disk. I'll have you know that I am not working on a team or anything, this is just a hobby. YES! I know that I wrote 2.0 in VBDOS, and YES! this was a gigantic mistake. If you go to my site, there is a voting pole for which language the next version should be written in.

A poll to determine what language it should be written in? What for? Write it in whatever language you prefer. But if your poll gets honest suggestions from a fair sample of OS developers, I can already tell you what the result will be: C. But, of course, I doubt you'll get a fair result from a poll like that. People may just suggest something weird or difficult simply because it's weird and difficult and they don't really care.

Or we'll suggest something weird and difficult because we've done a kernel in it ourselves, or we'll suggest something weird and difficult because we're working on figuring out how to do a kernel in it ourselves...

Might I suggest Forth or Lisp? ^_-

Forth actually isn't that hard if you stay far far away from the ANS spec. It's also one of the shortest routes to a self-hosting OS that I'm aware of. It has the added benefit that, because you have the full language and compiler available at all times, you can play with a given device for a little bit directly from the command prompt before writing a driver for it. And you can write just the lowest level functions for a driver and call them directly to see how well they work. It's dead simple, and it's close to the machine. I'm sure that you can tell by now that I like the language.

Lisp is a royal pain. I -think- I understand how to write the front end and code generator for a compiler, and I have some neat ideas for how to handle task switching and whatnot, but I have no idea how to write the output side of a compiler. Nor do I know what to do about multitasking with a garbage collector, loading the system in the first place, or any of that fun stuff. But it would be -really neat- to have an OS for the PC that's lisp all the way down.

No, c'mon, C#.  It's the language of the future.

C#? But what do you do about the CLR? That has to be written in something, after all...

Pretty funny discussion. But lets not make it like another "what do you tink..." sort of thread.

Why call a QBASIC shell an OS then?

Not an os- not even close.

Come back when you at least can write "Hello World" from Pmode without any underlying OSes.

You have no idea how much this pissed me off.

Hi ,

Its me modshah. Neither do I know what BrandonS means when he says he "misspelt" ? It makes no sense at all in this thread. Anyway I will not answer anything else in this thread as it is getting dragged into a useless topic.
