Has anyone got an early linux to compile with modern code. Eg. have you been able to compile one of Linus's early linux and get it to actually run withc bochs or something similar. I actually attempted this in this project but still struggling a bit. I personally want to go this route as I have learned a lot, but I do question Linus's sanity.

I'd say forget about early Linux: the modern Linux core isn't all that much harder to understand (especially if you concentrate on i386 branch) and you save yourself the trouble of mislearning all the things that Linux got wrong in the beginning..
The real problem with goto is not with the control transfer, but with environments. Properly tail-recursive closures get both right.
