Emulation | IRC Q

I'm very interested in OS development, but I would like to clear a few things up. To test any operating system in which I make, is there some sort of emulation process, so that you don't have to install the operating system. I think I saw this in the faq, you can save your operating system to a cd, and load it into your computer and have an emulated version of it, is this correct?

Also, is there a common channel in which is specific to OS deving, I find it helpful to listen to those who understand the field, as it usually leads me to some new understanding, or subject in which I can research and come to understand.

Thank you for your time and effort,

Joe

Well I can't help you with the IRC question, That's not my thing... ;)

As for emulation... See: http://www.osdev.org/wiki/Category:Emulators

Bochs & QEMU are the common choices, they have good debugging capabilities.

Indeed, that's where I loiter. If you want to ask me a question though you'll have to address me by name (_JamesM) otherwise my client won't flash at me enough!

Quick topic-stealing question: Why the underscore in front of the name? I've seen it everywhere, and I don't understand it. :?

I also am in #osdev, but only during my evenings (whenever those happen to be for you).

Because I've forgotten the NickServ password for JamesM :D (If it was that name I registered in the first place, it's registered anyhow :D)

Ah. That makes a lot of sense, now that I think about it.
