Simple C++ OS to play with?

Hi all
I'm looking for a fairly simple OS, implemented in C++ for x86 that I can play with. I'm most interested in issues surrounding multiprocessor environments, as I think this will become ever more important in future years - but I don't want to start from scratch and write my own VGA drivers etc.
Can anyone suggest such a project?
