Hi, i don't know whether this will prove useful to anyone since intel have downloadable versions of their documents which might be easier to find stuff in but if you visit this Intel page,
http://appzone.intel.com/literature/Sea ... vFile=TRUE
and run a title search for ia-32 then you can order the 3 ia-32 system programming docs (those pdf files you download, #1. Basic arch #2. Instruction set ref #3. System Programming) straight to your door for free :D.

Hi, i also found an amd lit equiv to intel.
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/Abou ... 02,00.html
Select your appropriate country on the right nav bar :D.
You'll also need the lit order numbers which can be found on the pdf downloadable page views.
i.e.
Document Name      Publication #    Rev   Issue Date
                        ^ lit order number.

But the most of the useful docs the order numbers are:
20734 - AMD CPUID Manual
22007 - AMD Athlon™ Processor x86 Code Optimization Guide
22466 - AMD 3DNow/MMX Extensions Manual
21928 - 3DNow!™Technology Manual

25175 - AMD Athlon™ XP Processor Model 8 Data Sheet
24309 - AMD Athlon™ XP Processor Model 6 Data Sheet
23792 - AMD Athlon™ Processor Model 4 Data Sheet
21016 - AMD Athlon™ Processor Module Data Sheet
25480 - AMD Athlon™ MP Processor Model 6 OPGA Data Sheet for Multiprocessor Platforms
24685 - AMD Athlon™ MP Processor Model 6 Data Sheet
24310 - AMD Duron™ Processor Model 7 Data Sheet
23802 - AMD Duron™ Processor Model 3 Data Sheet
21918 - AMD-K6®-III Processor Data Sheet
21850 - AMD-K6®-2 Processor Data Sheet
20695 - AMD-K6® Processor Data Sheet
20726 - AMD-K6® Processor Multimedia Technology

And again, they're free. Enjoy :D

You can also get the specs/docs for AMD's x86-64 technology (I'm currently waiting for mine :) for all you who want a real challenge... programming for an architecture that hasn't even been released yet ;)

x86-64.org has an emulator for Linux (works great!  register/memory peeks/poke, etc) or you can get simics (commercial) and enjoy a pseudo 64-bit environment :)
