memory size probing

Question about which tools to use, bugs, the best way to implement a function, etc should go here. Don't forget to see if your question is answered in the wiki first! When in doubt post here.

If you want to start an OS war, fine by me, as long as each side comes up with some reasoned arguments (and not "Windows sucks" or "Linux blows").

However, please start a new thread, as such a flame^H^H^H^H^Hdiscussion is nothing to do with "memory size probing".

As for memory size probing: don't there exist several bios calls to get the amount of RAM installed in a pc?

some with limits to 64 mb and others that recognize the whole ram?

've heard rumbles that direct probing of memory is not that safe it looks like. Just my opinion. 'd rather use bios calls to determine the amount of ram prior to doing this direct probing stuff.

as for Linux Is Better Then Windows: This exclamation lacks proof. Neither one is better.

If you do graphics design and work a lot with cad or 3d rendering and you can not afford a sgi workstation which blows away the normal pc due to its construction, then you are well done with a pc, windows and your graphics design software. Windows feases networking in a SMB-Network in a way you don't really need much knowledge about networking. The OS and its drivers are doing it for you.

If you do software engineering and debugging or high level networking stuff, you are best off with unix like operating systems and environments, cuz unix is from its very beginnings laid out as an open, configurable system for programmers and scientists. You need knowledge about many things, cuz you have to put settings in configuration files read by Drivers, Programs (consoles, file system automounter - fstab, et cetara), but you can be sure that such a system never craps out because some auto-recognizing module thinks there has to be something changed in the registry.

I enjoy using both of them: windows for graphics design and 3d modeling - maya rulez - and linux for all my networking and os developing stuff.

One thing the Linux advocates often forget is that if it wasn't for Windows, or Microsoft in general, they wouldn't have a PC -- or if they did, it would have been very expensive. Without the cheap, low-spec DOS and Windows operating systems, we would have had some expensive, powerful IBM OS (probably OS/2). Windows 3.1, 95 and 98 might not have been the best technically, but they did bring the PC platform to the masses, and made cheap hardware available to everyone (including Linux hackers and us OS developers). Luckily Microsoft have almost replaced the Windows 95/98 range with 2000 and XP, which are of much higher quality.
