People are so hung up over Microsoft. Remember at one time there were three DOSes (IBM PC-DOS, MS-DOS and DR-DOS), two word processors (WordPerfect and Microsoft Word for DOS) and one spreadsheet (Lotus 1-2-3). Microsoft's monopoly is a relatively recent thing.

Glad to see Clicker is progressing so well, Pype! I might have to give it another try some point soon. Nice concepts and some good ideas in there.

Well, my own kernel plans are on hold for a while anyway. My free time has been swallowed up for personal reasons.

And the point about standards is a good one. And it's a situation that will only get worse (or might get better, who knows). It will certainly get harder to code an OS. Give it a year or two and nobody will be running PS/2 keyboards or mice for example. All difficult to program USB stuff, not good! But progress is progress!

don't worry about those USB keyboard/mice, dudes. most BIOSes have nice options that allow the chipset to emulate ol'good 8042 behaviour with these device. i have friends that have USB mice on their laptop and Linux says /dev/mouse is /dev/psaux could it be more explicit ?

Now, it could be expected that using /dev/psaux, it will be more complicated to access some special functions like power control, probe radio channel, report battery status, etc., but do *we* really care, after all ?

Depends on whether you want to write an OS just for fun or if you want to take a slice of the market. First case: no, second case: yes, probably.
