I'd say linux because it doesn't crash as often and gets less viruses (Still Linux doesnt help you get rid of them, you have to do it yourself).

"I've noticed lately that the paranoid fear of computers becoming intelligent and taking over the world has almost entirely disappeared from the common culture. Near as I can tell, this coincides with the release of MS-DOS"

Nowadays, nobody can really say "this OS is the best above the others". This because several OS's are leaders in a part or a use of the whole.

Windows has the "just click next several times and it will be installed". Linux has the "You can tweak me sooo much!" thingy. THe BSD has the "Look, I'm a server and I don't crash!" functionality...

The answer is: IT DEPENDS. What use is it for? Do you have money? Do you need physical tech support? What is your hardware? etcetera...

And above any other, there will be my OS (as son as I can figure out how the phoock to develop one lol xD

c ya, and don't fight... just blame it on bill and linus for not having a public laser-sword fight to finish this neverending question between OSs.

But I can say: This is the best comment!
Only one must be added: It should be for free! It should be open source!

And I totally agree with jensif, too!
While I use Windows on my desktop (with legal licenses if anyone dares to question!) I use FreeBSD on my server compur (with my WLAN card and other hardware, for some reason, it just runs more stable then linux), I think they both for me fulfill their task really well!

Longhorn has been delayed several times and from what i hear(though im not pleased) Apple has matched what longhorn says it will have. And with Firefox(firefox rules) taking away from ie and linux for sever and desktop. Not to metion apple getting it back together, the future looks pretty dull for Microsoft.

A MacOS X for x86 hardware would be interesting ... but then, all the MacOS apps are for PowerPC.

I agree, I would be quite interested in trying OS X but I dont have a Mac, but then again the reason the made OS X the way they did, that is, a unix based OS is becos it makes them one step closer to the x86 platform.

for you who say that microsoft will rule all, read this:
Microsoft has, untill lately been ignoring Linux and other OS's completely makiong the public think "Theres nothing but windows out there", now, resently they have started to feel threatend by it, they loose several users to it every day and they have made several fraud atemts into making linux look bad, these include "Investigatins" to compare a windows and a linux server, the people who made the tests said that windows was more secure, a couple of days later it was revealed that microsoft had sponsored the test and that it all was a hoax, now they have moved to realize that Linux is here to stay and they are acctually making software for it, yup, thats true, theres a linux version of the windows media player codecs now and a version of the player is on its way, when Microsoft start other companies will follow!

Microsoft allredy isnt alone, there is a version of winamp for linux comming, realplayer has ported to linux, Acrobat has made a reader for linux, there is alredy LinDVD and PowerDVD has been ported, other people will follow. I havnt been able to find PowerDVD but I know it comes bundled with Xandros Linux.

so, the truth is: Open your eyes! The era of Linux is comming!!

If they're written properly it should only take a recompile.

All well written apps should never assume the endianess of the host computer.

Not all of these companies are porting to Linux because they think it's a better OS... they're just looking to score a profit.

Microsoft for the past few years has been trying to secure their position in the application market for a couple reasons...
1. the lawsuits (ie: the fact that the law is challenging their OS "monopoly")
2. the fact that there are other OS's in use (ie: potential markets)

Perhaps more reasons, as well, but that doesn't necessarily mean they deem it a risk, it's simply a smart financial move... Microsoft is full of them.

Keep in mind, too, that even if Linux were to become the standard OS, MS would still be playing a massive role, I'd imagine. All the MS apps would be ported to it, and people would use them, too.

I love Linux, and use it on a regular basis, but it's still got a long way to go before it's accepted among the masses... that is to say *IF* it's to be accepted by the masses. There's still several things in the unix philosophy that (in my opinion) do not lend itself to a desktop OS.

That being said... I think the typical "desktop OS" is pretty useless...

But doesnt OS X have any Assembly in it? if it does we need more then a recompile... if you didnt know (allthough I asume you do), assembly varies depending on what CPU it is going to run, therefore, a kernel written for i386 will not run on a ppc or the other way around.

I dont think youmquite understood what I ment. What I mean is that software companies are acnowlading the existance of Linux and are porting their apps to it, when more and more companies start doing this more users will more to linux atracted by the stability and to try something new, still knowing they can use their favorite apps. I'm not saying that they port apps becos they found the OS to be superior, if they did MS would have no apps :P :P :P :P
