What is a good OS name???

Post by matthias »

I've build a simple OS and want to come up with a name for it.
So my question is:

How do you come up with a good OS-name?

Come up with a working name first that is what you're stiving to accomplish with your OS. This has the added benefit of reminding you about your goals.

matthias, why are you making your OS? How is it different from other OSs? Take this difference, and make it into a name ;)
Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

I think you're right about that, so I've made up a name for my os :) My os is going to be fully 64-bit so I put 64 in the name. So I think this is going to be it: OS64 :p

I like the way Samba came up with it's name. Take the idea behind your project (a Server Message Block server/client), use some of the letters from that, SMB, and search through the standard dictonary word list for words that contain those letters. Of course then you have to see which of those names are already legally taken.

In my case, I came up with the (working) name for my OS, "Lizix" as a joke based on a nickname some friends had for me (Liz). If, someday, it ever becomes something big, I figure I'll change it to something more professional.
My friends thought it was a good name :) Mind you, their first reaction when I mentioned the name was, "are you making a distro of Linux?"

You might want to think about a different name. That one is taken.
