Which controlers are always present in a PC?

I like to know which 'controler chips' are always present into a PC architecture machine. I like this information to separate the 'static device drivers' from the 'dynamic & instalable device drivers'.

I belive some of these are: PIT, PIC, DMA...

Where can I get this information?
