Main Page design

Post by Walling »

I created a new design of the Main Page: User:Walling/Sandbox. What do you think about it?

Uh, just a new look for the same thing?
I probably missed something... :?

Uhm, yeah. Maybe it's not that great. It is another look for the same thing. I just thought that the front page of the wiki could be a little more welcoming. Instead of criticizing it by saying it's boring I tried to be more constructive.

Well the only thing i find disturbing about it is the abundance of extra boxes. (wiki art? :P) For the rest, I agree that your version of the welcome message is more appropriate.

I'd personally replace "what and why" with a link to the project list, as being more useful in this location.

Yes, wiki art. I love it :D

Another version: User:Walling/Sandbox2.

Nice :)

That'd be a better main page

The second one is much more clean and therefore better. However I find the colours not quite fitting. The yellow is, for me, unbearable. Also the borders are too think for that style of grey. As far as the layout in general I prefer it over the current Main_Page.

If the yellow color is unbearable, should I change it then? I actually like it. I think it highlights the box so you read the text. I also myself like the thick borders. I like the "notable" look. That is why I also like the first proposal I made with boxes for each subject. But the yellow color could be changed. The borders could be made thinner. If people want that.

What ?!?!?! My page is boring!!! gasp! :)

I kind of like User:Walling/Sandbox with some exceptions....
  • Remove the edit links, any one that needs to be editing the main page should be capable of finding out how to edit those sections. We could also put edit links on the talk back page.
  • Get rid of the navigation thing along the top right, we could make the Navigation box on the left into more of a navigation box and move some of it's current content to the toolbox.
  • Center the main banner
  • maybe move the "more..." to the upper right of each box
All just my opinion, get everyone elses feedback too. I voted for the first Sandbox just because I kinda like the borders. At the very least we could change out the banner along the top of the current page.

I like the first one. The borders look good.

It is a lot better than the current page (no offence, chase!)

Even if you like borders, thats just too much of the good stuff. I voted for Sandbox2.

I realize now that my first criticisms were a little too strict. There are some really good ideas in both of the sandboxes.
However, I felt like making my own little test.

You may be saying to yourself "Hey! aren't those colours from Wikipedia?" Yeah, I admit it, I'm a sucker for desaturated blues. Any design ideas that could be merged from this one would make me very happy.
