OSfaq for downloading...
OSfaq for downloading...
I've been trying to get back into OSdev (researching right now) and I had a thought: is there a place where I can download the ENTIRE WIKI in one nice file. I don't like to have to go onto the net much and search the wiki (i don't have the time to dedicate to going online, and such), but I wouldn't mind having it at my fingertips (I'm the kind of guy who does a _LOT_ of "right-click, save as..."-ing).
Thanks, and Cheers, DH.

Try using HTTrack or something like that
Re:OSfaq for downloading...
The admin page of the wiki (PhpWikiAdministration) has a link to make an archive of all the pages, but you need to be an administrator to use it.
Perhaps if you asked an admin nicely, they'd get you a copy (not sure who is one, though - perhaps Pype.Clicker or Solar)

Re:OSfaq for downloading...
we're both, indeed. that feature has been disabled for normal users to avoid excessive bandwidth consumption from the server (or at least, i assume so. df, bash me if i'm wrong here...)
the "mature" content of the FAQ has been collected into "all in one" pages for the very purpose of letting people gather per-theme printable content. If that still don't match what you need, you can leave your e-mail here and i'll gather a PDF for you ...
Make sure you have large enough account and allow 2-3 working days response, though ...

Re:OSfaq for downloading...
getting the "snapshot" dump do work (it's more a "mime" than XML, though, and pretty useless for anything else than database recovery).
trying to get the XHTML dump results in an empty archive of 17MB (likely that the filenames were never written ... probably some PHP oddities).
So sorry folks: even maintainers cannot get the pre-print version of the FAQ...

rofl. I guessed so. I'll try that HTTtack thing.
One more thing: if you _EVER_ get the faq onto a single file or something like that, I can mirror it for you on any number of sites that I can that has enough space (and as always, this great community gets priority )
Thanks for trying! DH.

Re:OSfaq for downloading...
Hm... I have no problem getting the XHTML dump, in fact I did so on request just recently.
I'll check my bandwidth allowance, perhaps I can provide a monthly snapshot for download from my webspace.

Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

okay, konqueror did it. Got the 1.7MB (not 17MB ::) ) file right ... currently uploading on SourceForge (as part of Clicker documentation so that you can get it on a high bandwidth mirror close to you .

Re:OSfaq for downloading...
get it here
html-zip package. It has problem with 'categories' though: all the category-like pages (e.g. "TroubleShooting" or "CollectedKnowledge") use the backlinks of "PhpWikiAdministration" :-\

Re:OSfaq for downloading...
I did the same to http://www.rootdirectory.de/solar/wikihtml.zip.
Do we link that from the FAQ somehow?

I'll upload it to my site and try to keep it up to date for this great community .
The place to get it will be: http://www.krugferd.net/~draketech/osfaq/monthly.zip

Re:OSfaq for downloading...
woops!
There seems to be an error in the archive when opened with a windows zip program... I ran a repair thing on the archive and put the new version on my site . This is not an isolated incident, as it doesn't work on other computers. Programs tried: winRar (used this to fix it), PowerDesk, and window$ XP built-in zip support. My copy is updated and I recommend people check theirs .
Cheers, DH.
PS. sorry about the double post, but I saw it necessary!
PPS. I tried the version by Pype and Solar, they are the same.

Re:OSfaq for downloading...
yep. for some unknown reason, only konqueror's builtin zip manager was able to open it. Copied the files, created a new archive and it finally looks like working.
The 'osfaq' release has been updated. Pick the 'xmas05-12am.zip' file, that should work.

Re:OSfaq for downloading...
Hmm... yes I keep getting an error message about the end of the archive when unpacking, but never had any trouble retrieving the contents (FilZip under Windows, unzip under Linux). Didn't know it made "real" trouble for other archivers, will fix it ASAP.
