Idears for names
Idears for names
My kernel is aproaching V.0.0.6 and it still doesent have a name any sugesttions people
Re:Idears for names
The version doesn't indicate anything. There's no point in comparing them either.
For a name, try google. Some people have found names in weird words in other languages (Karig for example), some use something that fascinates them (mobius) or something they just thought up as a concept (clicker), some use a completely random concept (black cat OS), some use old names (atlantisos) and some just choose a random first character and place OS behind it. Most common is to use your own nickname or realname and to use that first character or word. For for example Bubach that became BOS. For DennisCGc it became DennisOS.
Just don't mind the name. If it's good it'll make its own name, no matter how badly chosen, good.

Re:Idears for names
just make sure you don't pay money for the domain name too early

@Pype *rofl*
@thomas
Just pick a name you like, it will get catchy if your Operating System does too =p
Perfect example of this: Microsoft Windows

Re:Idears for names
I chose "Precursor OS", since it's the one I'm writing to throw away.
Top three reasons why my OS project died:
- Too much overtime at work
- Got married
- My brain got stuck in an infinite loop while trying to design the memory manager

http://cliki.tunes.org/Phantom%20OS you might not be the only one to use that generator, unfortunately ...thomas wrote: well i found a generator and i thought phantom OS was the best

Why use "windows" when you can exit via doors? DoorOS
But thinking a bit about that... Windows is Gates'OS ...
argh

Re:Idears for names
If I am not mistaken "Doors" is already a name of an OS, which btw might be interesting reading for those interested in OS concept research.
Re:Idears for names
I discovered a name for my OS by simply picking up a dictionary. It took be all of 30 minutes to choose 'Corona Operating System'. As already mentioned, areas of interest(science, mathematics, history) can be pooled for names. For instance, Pascal was named after frenchman Blaise Pascal who was a mathematician. There are numerous examples.....

Re:Idears for names
Since the objective of my OS was to be extremely small (512 bytes), I chose Protonix, which comes from the word "proton". I was originally going to use Atomix or AtomicOS, but AtomicOS was taken and Atomix sounds too close to that, so I picked something smaller than an atom.
Re:Idears for names
Windows, doors, and gates all some threshold or transition occurs...interesting. So perhaps an OS name that inspires that mindset further, like: TransporterOS; ExitOS; EnterOS; CaccoonOS; LimboOS... ;DAxelDominatoR wrote: Why use "windows" when you can exit via doors? DoorOS

This opens the door to all the little fellers wrapped around inside nuclie: PionOS, MesonOS, GluonOS, PhotonOS, ElectronOS, NuetronOS, HadronOS, BaryonOS, or QuanaOS...protonix wrote: Since the objective of my OS was to be extremely small (512 bytes), I chose Protonix, which comes from the word "proton". Photons are emitted from atoms, not in the nuclei.
