nothing to do with osdev but pc problems...

Post by Brill »

This has nothing to do with osdev but its definately getting on my nerves now.

I have a hdd, cdrw and a dvd drive. And none of them will link together in the same ide ribbon connecction.
I have my hdd on Prim.Master and i can only get one of the cd drives on sec.master. They won't pear up together on the same ribbon cable prim/secondary and if i do they wont detect on post. The jumpers are set correctly and i find it hard to believe all 3 drives are 'anti-social' and dont like each other. So what else can it be.
My motherboard is neer brand new and have had no problems with it. My bios is flashed to the latest version.
Please help. I am at a total loss with this prob. :S

Thank you in advance :).

Brill.

I have seen ide devices that wouldn't work together but 3 at once is just plain weird. When you tried to hook up one of the cd/dvd drives to the same cable did you make sure that you don't have more then one master setting on you hd? Western Digitals and some IBM drives are funky and have a seperate master with slave present setting.

Are you IDE cables rated for the correct speed? Are they possibly cable select ide cables?(usually having a small piece missing in the middle) Do you have the cable facing the the correct direction? Not just pin 1 -> pin1 but some motherboards and ide cables only work right with a certain end plugged into the motherboard.

Maybe it's the hard drive, try just the cd drives and see if post detects them.

Reload you BIOS defaults and after that I'd recommend trying the hd/cds in another system.

Of course it might just be that the IDE Gods are unhappy cause my cdrw died last night. :(

Check your BIOS settings (Both IDE channels are enabled)

You may have a bad cable (twisted, crimped, broken?)

One IDE device may have a bad controler

Check that one is master and one is slave. on each channel(dont even mess with Cable Select, it sucks)

get a new mobo, give me the old one. :)

Thanks.

It seems, i tried just using the two cd drives together on secondary. They worked. I then added the hd and then that worked. So now it all works :/.

But right now i'm having loads of intemet problems with my pc that come and go all the time. All three drives did work before, then not. So they will probably stop working again.

I never do cable select. I too agree its a waste of drive documentation. I have a feeling my hdd is the bad drive thats messing up but i have practically replaced my entire pc from upgrades fixes to my problems that i almost have a brand new pc, bar ram and a new hdd :/.

Cheers, Brill :D thanks for the support.
