my damn teacher installed windows over my linux partition at skool, and i am not quite sure how to build a cygwin cross compiler on a windoze system. could someone explain it to me so i dont have to spend 3 fuxoring weeks on it...i would like to resume from my latest backup code.

I would consider checking out the Wiki pages on "Cross Compiler Construction". By the way, can you really blame a teacher doing with his computer what he is supposed to do (IE, keeping control of it, making sure it works the way he needs it to)?

Or possibly compromise with your teacher and see if you can install coLinux. Teacher gets to have a Windows only computer and you get to run all your GNU/*nix apps.

You can do a "linux for windows" thing like mandrake [seems] to do (at least on my older disc version). You need a nopix-like disk/c image that is bootable and use linload (or something along thoes lines...) to run the kernel from DOS. For this you would most likely need to carry around a few floppies/CDs. Better yet (for you) is make your own linux and stick it on some disk/c(s). If you need some refrence goto the linux documentation project and check out "Linux from scratch" and "Pocket Linux".

How come that, whenever someone asks a question that is even remotely Linux-related but otherwise quite specific ("how do I do X?"), that it always results in a thread where people recommend half a dozen different distributions capable of doing Y...?

The answer was correctly given by Candy, and this is the link to go with it. This tutorial works for either Cygwin or Linux.

i am mad, and windoze is just how i say windoze, would u be mad if your teacher distroyed all you work for about 3 weeks but i have a back about 3 weeks old...... and my teacher expects me to use windoze, its not the 60/74 GB i toke from the other students, my teacher said she just wants windoze and no linux at all i mean seriously, who actully can get anything done with windoze...it crashes(I hate that blue screen....), its unsecure, it dosent have networking support for shi* and, it cant use cluster resources:(

Depending on the subject taught, but I'd daresay the subject isn't OpenOffice, Software Development under Eclipse, or Unix System Administration.

And anyways, you should prove you're flexible enough to use whatever tool is at hand. That's a skill in itself.

Well, she's the teacher, you're the student, and doing what you're told is part of the great process called "education"...

i mean seriously, who actully can get anything done with windoze...

If it ain't for security concerns or cost considerations (which are not an issue if it's the school's system you're using), I claim that Windows (with a Cygwin shell added) is at least up to par with Linux in the usability department. (Like, I don't need three weeks to set it up...)

I've never seen Win2k blue-screen, insecurity doesn't matter as it's not *your* system and it doesn't hold "critical" information anyway, depending on the subject of the class networking support doesn't matter, and quite obviously your teacher thinks you can do without cluster ressources.

Sorry, but my bottom line is: Grow up, kid. Use what's available, to best effect, and make it an artform.
