SPARC

Post by slacker »

i was wondering why SPARC is so expensive compared to x86's. the SPARC processor is about a third as fast as the top x86 processor. but it is 64 bits. what is SPARC generally used for? does the 64 bits increase the overall speed at all?

Supply and demand. Lots of people buy x86s, so the price comes down.

you usually don't buy ONE sparc processor ... you buy dozens of it and install them in large parallel machines that are used as servers ... Now, with nowadays ease of linux clustering, even that market segment has to fear the cheapness of x86 ...

there are also some sparc-based stations, mainly sold by SUN as high-end terminals for SUN working servers.
