hardware and drivers

how are you suppose to program hardware like modems and printers if there are so many places to write data to on these pieces of hardware and manufacturers dont release this information....?

If you search around the various open source operating systems then you may find one which already has a driver for the device you're interested in. I know source code isn't as good as documentation but, hey, it's better than nothing.

And, if you ask nicely, the author or maintainer of the driver might answer a few questions.
