How to Ask Questions (link)

Question about which tools to use, bugs, the best way to implement a function, etc should go here. Don't forget to see if your question is answered in the wiki first! When in doubt post here.

I think search feature is very useful but people just think that asking the question and getting its answer immediately by just sending a post is a lot easier. The admins (gurus, moderators,...) are doing a fairly good job sometimes when posting all the answers to people's very specific questions by showing their unlimited patience. In my opinion this is cool but to some extent. I mean the questions might be asked in a wrong way but moderators or other people answering questions should not give answer directly. OK to put simply, this forum should give the way that goes to answer, NOT the answer itself. Becuase then threads go out of their way... I hope I am clear enough... Thanx...

Well, yes, and quite in accord with the intent of the essay I've linked to. It was not because of what he said that I reposted it, but because he felt it needed to be said; I was supporting, not berating, his post. I'm sorry if my statement was unclear in this regard.

Why doesn't it need to be Said? Of Course it does! Otherwise people are gonna' keep on annoying other people!
I don't think that's what Schol-R-LEA meant. He said that the fact that Tim decided that it needed to be said is proof of the lack of thought that people give to a message they post.
Also: Wouldn't this Thread be Better off in the Off-Topic Section?
IMHO, doing so would undermine the purpose of this thread. Keeping this as a sticky thread at the top of this section will alert other OS developers to this problem. Schol-R-LEA felt obligated to bring this thread up due to actions within *this* forum of the message board.

Nice thread, however the link is dead...

This one works: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Schol-R-LEA, if you see this, you might want to fix the link in your initial post (since I don't believe many people will read to the bottom of the thread).

Better yet, do the classic google meta-link:

http://www.google.de/search?q=%22How+to ... +smart+way

;-)
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.
