Target systems

What kind of system are you aiming for with your OS? Do you want to aim for a much older system, with the expectation that it will perform well on even older machines, or would you rather take advantage of the greater power and memory of new systems to produce the most dazzling results possible? Are you designing for an off-the-shelf x86 system, or something less common but easier to develop for? Is portability a major concern for you?

While I've been engaged in learning the x86 systems, I've decided that I'll move on soon to a more portable design. Looking at the development of the 64-bit processors, and especially the new Cell architecture, I think that despite it's large installed base, the x86 platform is at the end of it days. There is going to be a huge fight between the CPU manufacturers in the next five years to see which of them will become the new standard.
