A20 and reset...

Post by Peter_Vigren »

I have seen some texts that warn about having A20 enabled when the CPU is being reset... So then I have some questions... Why is it dangerous? I have read some about that the computer start execution at top of the memory but I don't really understand what it means... What is meant with resetting the CPU? Is that the same as a reboot? Since for example Windows must enable A20 and it crashes like hell and reboot is needed every now and then... But the computer doesn't hang or explodes and dies on reboot...

(If anyone really understood my very... messy message then I probably should congratulate you... ;))

my OS enables the A20 gate and i have about 100 reset (triple faults for most) behind me: my computer never complained about this ... maybe they mean calling for a soft reboot will not do a clean job if A20 is enabled ... surely this message is for old old hardware (i mean >5 years ago :)
