Bona Fide OS Development
Okay, be looking for a site update by Saturday. I'm not going to tell you what will be updated 'cause I don't know yet how much I'm going to be able to get done before I update it.
So far I have been sent three links for online free logo generators:
http://www.flamingtext.com/start.html
http://www.webgfx.ch/startwebgfx.html

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
Okay, you might have noticed that the site isn't working correctly. This is because when I was uploading files to the server, the server ran out of total disk space(not the allotted amount but total amount). The web host says that when this happens wait a few hours and try again. So, if you're looking at the site and there's a bunch of broken links/missing graphics etc... Don't worry, it should be fixed soon.

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
Hm, when I go to http://surf.to/osdev I am redirected twice. I don't think it's a good idea to be redirected. It's not serious enough, and why do you do this at all? The page itself is quite good and I like it but if there were no redirections it would be still better... .
What do you think?
What do you think?
Re: Bona Fide OS Development
The second redirection is written by me, and it helps load-balancing the webpages.
I'm not really happy with the first redirection, too.
Perhaps we need a different service, but http://surt.to/osdev/ is a nicer address than
http://osanswers.port5.com/cgi-bin/forward1.pl
Do you know any good one? beam.to could be good, but it opens a popup ... :-/

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
Actually, all of the whatever.to's are from http://come.to
There you can select the kind of whatever.to that you want(surf, fly, come, run, walk, go, welcome, beam, switch, forward, get, move, etc). You get to chose what kind of ad is displayed: popup, top frame, bottom frame, delay page(that's what's being used now), random(any of the above), or NO ad(but this costs $17.99 US a year, plus giving them a credit card nubmer). I'd do the last option, but I don't have a credit card and have no intention of getting one.
Idealy, someone would come along and voluntier to host the site one their own server for free(no ads, no space limit, no bandwidth traffic limit) along with a free domain name. I tend to doubt though that will happen anytime soon.
I did get the site updated:
Added OS Design under Docs and Tutorials.
Added Memory Management 2 by Tim Robinson under Docs and Tutorials.
Added some new links.
Fixed some link problems.
Updated Part 1 of Computers and Numbering Systems.
Added two more entries to the Logo/Site Design Contest and removed 1 because of copyright problems.
You may know signup to be notified of updates to this site via email!
If you did sign up for notification via email, you'll need to do it again 'cause the data file was corrupted(don't worry, I'll back up the data file on regular basis so this doesn't happen).

Re: Bona Fide OS Development

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
Okay, this time the email updates really works!
Earlier I said:

What I meant by a free domain name is that they aren't going to make us purchase a domain name to that they can host it. Something like, "http//lala.alslkj.com/whateveryouwant" would be fine because I can set up the surf.to/osdev to send people to it.
As for the redirect of surf.to/osdev, I'm thinking that maybe I ought to change the ad to a popup. Then, while the second redirect is happening, people can close the popup. How does that sound?

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
I just updated the site:
Added many more links.
Added several more entries to the Logo/Site Design Contest.
Added Part 1 and Part 2 or the Computers and Numbering Systems tutorials under Docs and Tutorials.
Added IBM PC Keyboard Information for Software Developers by Chris Giese under Docs and Tutorials.
I will be adding a Downloads section soon. If you have some code that you would like to see there, please email it to me.
If you have any entries for the logo/site design contest, please hurry up and email them to me because after March 15 no more entries will be accepted.

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
Okay, expect the downloads to be up by Wednesday night(U.S. Pacific time).
There were 2 entries that were unable to be voted on for the past 3 days(16, 17, 18). I fixed the problem(a file had somehow been deleted) and talked to the author of the the entries and gave him a choice of extending the contest for 3 days or ending the contest on March 20 like I had planned. He choose the later option.
What to expect in the next update? A couple new tutorials, a cleaner link page(catagorized), a different look to the front page, and of course the downloads section.

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
Okay, I fixed some 404 Page not found errors and made a new redirection to the site:
http://osdev.redir.net
This one has NO ADS AT ALL!
The Logo/Site Design contest is over, however we have a tie! A tie breaker will be going until March 24 to break the tie.
The Tech News is now powered by Blogger. I fixed a problem with the 2 of the example kernels under downloads(thanks go to ratgod for alerting me to the problems).
(a "tie breaker" is something to "break" the tie of 2 or more things)

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
Okay, right now we're having some problems with the web hosts that keep the website from being updated. But, the winner of the Logo/Site Design contest is citizen428! I'll update the site as soon as the host allows me to.

Re: Bona Fide OS Development
Until Thursday, FTP access has been turned off on our site's servers: http://portal.portland.co.uk/kb/topic.php?t=1043
Until then, the site can't be updated.
The site that hosts the downloads is currently not up because the host is doing a server upgrade, but it should be back up in about an hour.
