I posted this here because the forum is titled "Everything else->General Ramblings", not in 'OS Design & Theory'.
Moreover this is related to "Makefiles" in general.

We have the ask smart questions forum rule. "Post where you should" for linux questions means posting in a linux forum.

Stupid is a person who under estimates other people's wits.
"There is no need to be stupid." applies to you.
berkus wrote:This doesn't mean you should start posting questions about your cat, your car and other general ramblings here.
Moreover comparing a Linux technical question with a cat is stupid, IMO. Following is written below the General Ramblings topic in the index.
"All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too."
AnishaKaul wrote:No, it is not. It is related to specifics of Kbuild, which are by the way described in details in the very source code you're reading. Just look under Documentation/. Yes, there's a lot to read.
Alright, I'll check it out.
Thanks for pointing out.

I have known `LinuxQuestions.org` for a long time now. I am also active on `unix.stackexchange`.
The reason why I choose to post here some specific questions is that I have realized that w.r.t some topics, this community is more helpful and/or knowledgeable as compared to the other two. The people here generally explain the things in a detailed manner as compared to the other communities (IMO).

It is not that I don't post the Linux questions on the Linux sites. I do post them there. Then whichever forum gets the question a better answer, I update the other forums with the same (that can help the other people too).

Those who don't wish to help w.r.t Linux questions can simply ignore this thread,
and if it is totally against the rules to post a Linux oriented question in ""Everything else->General Ramblings"" forum, then hit down the report button and let a moderator intervene.
If the moderator confirms that it is considered "abuse" to post a Linux question in this particular sub-forum, then I'll surely comply.

I don't know the answer to your problem, and I agree that you would probably be better off asking on a specialised Linux forum where you may find more knowledgeable people than here, but I have to agree with you that you have been the subject of insufferable rudeness.

This forum is specifically described as being suitable for "the funny thing your cat did", so a general question about Linux is hardly off-topic. I realise that people are very intolerant in the specialised forums but I think they should cut you a bit of slack here. Perhaps the description of this forum should be changed as there are so many "experts" ready to tell you what you are and are not allowed to post in it.

I recommended this website to someone the other day but had to add the rider "be careful what you post as the people there are pretty intolerant". I didn't realise that that even extended to "General Ramblings".

Hi,

As far as I can see, the OP posted on a General Forum with a Linux question. The justification for this is entirely reasonable and well thought through:
AnishaKaul wrote:The reason why I choose to post here some specific questions is that I have realized that w.r.t some topics, this community is more helpful and/or knowledgeable as compared to the other two. IMO, anything goes in general ramblings, as long as it falls within the realms of decency (see rules 7 and 8 at http://forum.osdev.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16944). If you don't have a useful response to supply, don't post. If you think that something does not meet the forum rules, use the "report this post" button.

It's a shame that you even have to add that rider. However, I do think it's reasonable to expect people to read and abide by the forum rules. That includes the long-term forum members who are helping to educate newcomers.

Cheers,
Adam

The General Ramblings category is fine for all types of questions and discussions except questions that are better categorized by another area such as OSDev questions. True, one of the stackexchange sites might give more answers but personal I'd rather ask my friends before asking the internet. The goal of the forum (and the site) is to build a community.
