How to edit GRUB

Hi guys i am new comer over here, for starters i have chosen GRUB as boot loader, i expect it to be loaded from USB at start up i don't expect that to be default but i expect it to give images of kernel which want to load, i need help editing the GRUB and if i do so do i need to compile it gcc, i still don't know system tree path i need to save grub.config when place that on pen-drive. please help me to edit and place it
