If they're written properly it should only take a recompile.

All well written apps should never assume the endianess of the host computer.

But doesnt OS X have any Assembly in it? if it does we need more then a recompile... if you didnt know (allthough I asume you do), assembly varies depending on what CPU it is going to run, therefore, a kernel written for i386 will not run on a ppc or the other way around.
You aren't paying attention. He is talking about the apps, not the kernel. It would be easy for Apple to port the OS, in fact since the OS iteself is an open source project called Darwin, we know that it has been done. The hard part is getting all those application vendors to recompile and distribute for x86, especilly ones with an interrest in keeping OS X where it is, like Microsoft (the biggest software provider for the Mac).

When I need a unix, at the moment I would choose FreeBSD, just works for me a lot better.

Depends :)

- Slackware.
Probably one of the most configurable Linux distributions. I'm using it and I like it a lot :)

- SuSE. Just for the newbies who wants to use Linux. Unfortunately, IIRC, you have to pay for it.

- Xandros (payed). Has really a windows look.

Others may add/edit the list. I just used these distros (and redhat also, more SuSE like, but not as friendly as SuSE was/is)

I ordered Ubuntu, have to check that.

HTH.

DennisCGc.

PS. you simply can't be an admin, if you want to be an admin, email Chase. (sorry if I'm going to be VERY OT ;) )

[edit]*kicks forum, just interpret [ list ] good and I'm happy![/edit[

I wouldnt suggest slackware, its very nice but he should start with something simpler since he never used it before.

There is a free version of SuSE so you can try that, Mandrake is also good, as far as I know FreeBSD is cinda like Slackware... not realy for a newbie.

As for administrator? where do you mean?
if at the forum... you cant!
if in a unix/linux system, if you didnt add one at install your toast ;)
(if your using Ubuntu, you dont have one though, then its "sudo <command>" *enter* <password> for root privelages, or sudo passwd root *enter* <root pass>. But I'd stick with sudo

Damn long time no see ppl. anywayz i had to put my two cent in this argument. the best os i think is linux (Fedora core 1-4). windows is great but linux leaves windows in the dust.

I think all the major OS's suck. Windows, sad to say, is the best in situations where you just want it to work (desktop that is). Linux is good if you like doing google and sourceforge searching trying to get everything to play nicely with each other due to the fact that so many n00bs have "contributed" to it. Not to mention driver support which isn't as bad as the other OS's out there besides Windows. Most of the time there is no gradient between bloated and minimalistic. Linux is now, IMHO, bloated for my tastes. Windows always has and will be bloated due to MS's position in the market. MacOS will go off of hype to try to get people who don't use it to feel bad and then worse when they see how buggy it is.

On top of all that, the commercial OS's are not allowed to really progress forward because they have to keep backwards compatibility. Whenever MS tries to phase something out, people *****. I remember hearing people complain about Windows 95 support ceasing. I'm not a big MS fan when it comes to their OS's, but it's partly the consumers' fault that their OS's are as insecure as they are. People don't feel like upgrading their software. People don't feel like learning knew things. I can understand if it costs your company money, but a lot of the problems people ***** about are just problems with them not wanting to learn new things.

I do have to say, to kind of make me look less like a MS supporter, that I think open source OS's are the best way to go. I really love being able to hack Linux's sources and add support for things I need. One problem that occurs from this is that there are too many incompetent people "contributing" and none of them agree on anything. Good ol' Linus Torvalds can be an utter ******* at times as well, and a whiney ***** too. Without him, however, Linux would be in a much worse state (although in some areas it'd be better, i.e. Reiser4).

*BSD is pretty organized, but is so complex and large. In the *nix world I'd have to go with Linux. Just the process of upgrading the system is overdone. Some of the documentation contridicts itself (At least in the FreeBSD camp) due to the fact that they are maintaining 3 branches at once (4.x for paranoia, 5.x for sanity, 6.x for people who want a modern OS). OpenBSD uses nonstandard software and XFree (I know you can get around it, but I'm talking defaults here). I don't know anything about NetBSD but it can't be any better.

SkyOS is an opensource feeling operating system with a price tag on it. Haiku will never be finished despite the claims of how "rapidly" it's being developed. Syllable forces a horrible GUI on you. Nobody cares about Hurd. Solaris is a free commercial OS with bloat stuffed here and there and Sun glaring down at you with every action you take.

I could go on and on, but it's pointless. All of my arguments sound like horrible ranting and I'll probably get flamed for this whole topic. I'm just frustrated at how OS's are going. The only OS's that go anywhere just seem like rehashes of old concepts and OS's and the OS's that want to try something new don't get any support and never get off the ground. Longhorn seems to be the only OS that is trying to do anything worthwhile, even though by the time it's release MS will strip it of all the features that made it anything more than Windows XP with built-in Avalon and hardware acceleration.

what does renu.msi have to do with installing linux?
