SphinCorp wrote:BTW: basic rulez.
Some forms of basic are ok but forms like VB are for people who have absolutely not even the most basic understanding of system workings....
Which implies they shouldn't be doing OSdev...

Ok, enough flaming about Visual Basic. All I really see are unfounded stereotypical remarks that do not show even a single hint of actual knowledge about the language.

Come back when you wrote your own 3D platformer in VB, and had it claim the first prize in a compo. By that time you know better than to randomly start bashing underdog languages.

If you are interested in a C#.NET (which in respects is similar to VB) os, visit http://research.microsoft.com/os/Singularity/

I do know how to code in VB, and thats what i think about after 6 months of experience with it, it might not be much, but after that, that's what I think of it....
Just my opinion (and you cant truly say that it gives you much system knowledge... )
Jules

edit: Its only my personal taste, personaly it confused me to (to much actual words, not enough, maths...), I prefer C personally.
second edit: I don't mean to start a flame and I don't mean to be insulting..., in fact just forget I said anything this can only lead to a fight...

I agree.

My personal opinion about basic that it's ugly and not powerfull. I prefer C, and if you want to keep it very easy you can use Pascal. It's as easy as basic.

Experience with rapid application development is not hulpful with OS-development. It can work against you when you did too much RAD, because in OS development there is no such thing as RAD.

SphinCorp:
P.S.: I also know c++, php, html, xml, asp, and am a master of windows cmd (And I have an obsession with DOS 6.22, THE LAST OF THE PURE DOS!)
Being obsessed with DOS 6.22 like SphinCorp is not a good start writing OS-es. It's the worst inspiration you can have. DOS 6.22 is the ugliest OS ever made. In 16-bit realmode when 32-bit CPU's already exist for 10 years, single tasking, single user..it's a shame there where still releases of that OS in the 90's. And CMD master? Learn a real shell like Bash or a real scriptinglanguage like Perl.

hehehehe, that a joke, what the hell, CMD mater, to even be allowed to post on this forum, you should be able to use a shell to a really high level, that's not something to brag about...

So when I tell you guys to stop bashing VB you pick something else to bash on. If you can't post anything nice, don't post anything at all.

In the meantime i've seen insults at my address, SphinxCorp's address, and to VB users, Basic users, DOS and windows users in general. If you can't even pretend to value people with other opinions then you should not hang around here. The main idea of a forum is to help people, not indoctrinate them.

Since there's nothing of the original discussion running and you don't listen when asked to watch yourselves, I have all the excuse I need to shut you two up.

Bottom line: Thread locked because of suthers and svdmeer who couldn't behave respectful towards others.

DOS, Basic and CMD are all wonderful tools if used for the right job, so value those abilities instead of indifferently claiming they are among the worst things in the world.
