ld output formats elf_i386 and elf32_i386

ld output formats elf_i386 and elf32_i386

I am unfamiliar with the difference between ld's emulation elf_i386 and elf32_i386. Is there really a diffrence? Which one should I use when having grub load my OS(if it even matters)?
