Getting my Bootsector on a USB Drive

Post by calpol »

Up until now i've been using a virtual floppy drive and using partcopy to get my bootsector on the virtual drive so i can emulate my OS in bochs. However when i went to enrol at college 2 days ago they gave me a free 128MB USB stick and i would like to use that to boot my OS from as i've never tried my OS outside of bochs. Unfortunatly i cannot use a real floppy drive as my pc did not come with one installed and the cheap usb one i bought from ebay broke after about a weeks use .

I have booted an OS from a USB stick before on this machine so i know the machine is compatible before you ask  (i don't remember how i did it :x). I have looked through partcopies readme file but none of the commands seem to work.

Anyone know how to get partcopy to do this or any other programs that can do the job?

The problem is that some emulate it as a floppy and some as a harddrive, now getting the boot sector onto a usb fob is not easy, you may think it easy because one way works OK with you combo of keyfob bios emulation etc, but then it does not work on someones else's.

The only way i have found to easy boot from usb keyfob, is to use window put the fob in and format it to FAT and click add sys files, this make a bootable key fob to dos.
You than use dos to load your OS, maybe adding the loader to autoexe.bat.

You may think, that it would be as simple as replacing Dos boot sector, with your's but its not.
