IDE driver in compatibility mode

IDE driver in compatibility mode

If I probe a number of IDE devices in compatibility mode, can I assume that each pair of channels cannot be used simultaneously, or can I assume the opposite? This mainly in conjunction with the PCI IDE spec which has a bit indicating they are linked, so I wonder whether this is so for any non-PCI-IDE device.
